Farm-to-Table Wedding Ideas for the Budget-Conscious Couple

Take the style quiz to get personalized content.
There's no denying that the farm-to-table movement is having a moment right now. With many couples implementing more organic and local foods into their daily diets, it's no surprise that we're seeing a shift from the traditional wedding reception fare to a more flavorful and fresh post-ceremony meal. But fresh food often comes with a higher price point, and catering for 50+ guests can become a large financial commitment. Here are our tips for getting a farm-to-table feel at your wedding while still staying on budget.
Serve fresh flavored water.
Organic juices and non-alcoholic beverages can be pricey, so cut the costs by serving up flavored water instead. Make pitchers of fruit- or herb-infused water before the wedding and serve these refreshing drinks at the rehearsal dinner or reception. We suggest making rose, mint, lemon, or cucumber water. Decorate with fresh-from-the-farm flowers.
Save some cash on your floral arrangements by going to a local farm and picking your own. A few days before the wedding, venture to a nearby farm with your wedding party and any guests who want to join. Then simply arrange in Mason jars or mini galvanized buckets for the reception tables. Picking flowers will be a fun way to kickstart the wedding festivities weekend and it makes for a great DIY project.
Create a craft brew bar.
Opt for locally-brewed beers at your reception to give it a farm-to-table vibe. The beer will give guests a taste of the area, and serving multiple types of beer will be much more cost effective than a full-service liquor bar.
Opt for homegrown hors d'oeuvre.
Statistically, guests eat about 30-40 percent less when food is passed rather than when dining buffet-style. Have waiters pass pricier items on trays during the cocktail hour. Since guests will be eating less during cocktails than during the dinner portion of the evening, you can serve farm-fresh poultry or seafood for a fraction of the cost.
Go heavy on the veggies.
To save on the main course, have your catering company or venue serve larger portions of vegetables rather than poultry or seafood. By serving a lush green salad and multiple locally-grown sides with a smaller cut of meat, your guests will still feel full and you won't be spending as much per plate.
Send guests off with something sweet.
By buying locally-made favors like honey or granola in bulk, you can get more for your money. Purchase large quantities of the sweet treats and then package the favors yourself. Don't forget to include a sign or a note attached to the favor with the significance of the sweet!
